Prevention and health promotion are legally anchored in the cantonal constitution and the health law. The previous concept for prevention and health promotion dates back to 2004. Since then, not only the population itself, but also health care and the health policy context have changed. Current challenges include demographic change, the use of social media and the increasing need for child and adolescent psychiatric care services. The new concept takes these developments into account and serves a common understanding of prevention and health promotion in the canton of Zurich.
Action programs for children and young people as well as older people
The new concept for prevention and health promotion developed by the Health Directorate sets out the strategic guidelines for future measures in the Canton of Zurich. In addition to an overarching vision, these also include strategic approaches and record important levels of action as well as values and attitudes. In addition, various key topics are identified: the focus is on mental, physical and social health. The cantonal action programs for children and young people as well as older people take these into account. Another established cross-directorate program focuses on suicide prevention. In the coming years, strengthening the mental health of the Zurich population, especially children and young people, will be a priority.
Office of Health responsible for new concept
The implementation of the new concept is the responsibility of the Office of Public Health. “Prevention and Health Promotion Canton of Zurich”, a department of the Institute for Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Prevention at the University of Zurich, was commissioned to plan, promote and disseminate preventive and health-promoting measures. Government Councilor Natalie Rickli: “Health promotion and prevention are important pillars of high-quality health care. They can help improve quality of life, prevent disease and reduce long-term healthcare costs.”
