One of the strategic priorities of OBRAMAT, the leading retail company for the distribution of materials in the construction and renovation market, is care for the well-being and safety of its more than 5,600 employees, since they are its reason for being and are placed at the center of the company.

Laura Serrano, safety manager at OBRAMAT, analyzes the data and confirms that awareness and involvement of all partners is key: “Thanks to the continuous improvement of our safety culture, which is formalized through our “Safe Environment” commitment, “We have clear goals to achieve ZERO accidents for both our partners and customers.”

Safety week at work

During this week, OBRAMAT celebrates with more focus its success in achieving a safe environment. Therefore, with a fun and competitive dynamic, he encourages his collaborators to identify possible potential risks to continue in the pursuit of security success.

In addition, the SAFE PLACE TO WORK awards are being launched, which will reward the Department Stores with the best behavior in terms of safety.

System for the prevention of occupational risks

OBRAMAT works actively to guarantee the work performance of its partners under the best safety conditions, in a safe and quality environment. And to achieve this goal, we work daily to build a strong safety culture, known and shared by all the company’s personnel. As a result, OBRAMAT was able to reduce accidents by 80% over the past five years.

With its own prevention service, whose priority is to guarantee the well-being and safety of its employees through the development and implementation of the principles included in its preventive policy, it provides coverage to all work centers in the specialties of Industrial Hygiene, Ergonomics and Psychosociology.

In addition, it also has an external prevention service, coordinated by the company’s prevention service, which covers the specialties of health monitoring and occupational safety. OBRAMAT also has health and safety committees in each centre, to promote the participation and consultation of partners on a regular and periodic basis and to jointly define the company’s actions in matters of safety and health.

To achieve these ambitious goals, OBRAMAT relies on various figures and activities:

  • Safety supervisors at each warehouse who is responsible for reviewing safety conditions, informing and guiding the entire team. They carry out “safety tours” of the destination warehouse for new partners so that they know the risks of their assignments and warehouse, and what measures are in place to avoid them. The supervisor carries out an individual evaluation of safety knowledge. In Spain, OBRAMAT has 24 safety supervisors per warehouse, this is a total of 864 supervisors, which corresponds to 16% of the total number of partners.
  • Safety culture creation programs in newly opened warehouses.
  • They are made security competitions in stock to identify potential risks.
  • The use of internal tools at each warehouse to consistently communicate relevant security topics.
  • Fortnightly meeting between warehouse directors and the prevention service to analyze the most important risks and incidents and build and mainstream preventive measures.
  • Financial quarterly security premiums based on good security dynamics. Bearings exceeding one year, two years and 1,000 days without accidents are recognized in various categories.
  • Training, evaluation and training in the safe use of machines with continuous training of users and in accordance with the UNE application standard.
  • Active participation in international work teams in Adeo Group which, in line with the ADEO Safety Reference, develops new preventive measures and improvements.

Health in the working environment

In line with its commitment to creating a safe environment for partners and clients, OBRAMAT also has a ground-breaking program in terms of musculoskeletal health.

After analyzing the physical and ergonomic load of the tasks performed in the different warehouse assignments with specific studies through risk assessments and the use of the latest technologies such as isokinetic sensors, the company has implemented a physiotherapy service to protect all his collaborators. The service is implemented in the warehouses when they reach one year from the opening date and is offered on average two days a week in spaces set up in the warehouses for increased comfort for the partner, within their working day. In the same spirit, OBRAMAT offers partners other health care, for example a 50% subsidy for Adesla’s health card.

“We want to have a positive impact on our environment and what better way than to work together to reduce the accident rate in a sector, construction and renovation, where it is one of the highest in Spain,” concludes Serrano.
