Microsoft is currently on the site and fights against the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) of the United States the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which is doing its best to stop the Xbox maker from buying Activision Blizzard. The $68.7 billion takeover deal has already faced hurdles in the UK, with the CMA rejecting it, and the FTC now appearing to have the same concerns over to the evolution of power in the sector. Meanwhile, some interesting revelations have surfaced, with reference to the PlayStation 6 release date, namely 2028 one more time.
This had happened before, when the documents filed by the CMA showed that Microsoft would continue to offer the lucrative Call of Duty games on the PlayStation platform if it acquired the game’s publisher, Activision. Sony argued that access would be lost after 2027, meaning the famous IP wouldn’t be available in time for the release of its next-gen console (presumably the PlayStation 6). Microsoft representatives have issued a new statement regarding the availability of Call of Duty, at asserting that “this term would exceed the expected period for the launch of the next generation of consoles (in 2028) anyway”, it seems that 2028 could really be the year of the launch of the PS6.
This comment, which as noted above related to a deal to publish CoD games on “next PlayStation consoles”, also implies that the successor to the Xbox Series X|S will be available in 2028.
A separate and reasonably accurate report rapport created in 2017 by Goldman Sachs suggested a 2027 timeline for the PS6, having correctly predicted 2020 for the launch of the PlayStation 5. The report also mentioned 2023 for the PS5 Portable, which now appears to come in the form of “Project Q ” from Sony for Remote Play by Sony.
With such a gap between the PS5 (2020) and PS6 (2028) release years, the chances of a mid-cycle refresh in the form of a PS5 Slim or PS5 Pro console are improving, this latest already rumored rumor for release in 2024.
