This Saturday the online plebiscite began, in which the militants of the Democratic Revolution and Social Convergence from across the country will decide whether or not they approve the merger of the Broad Front to form a single party.
In Ñuble, both groups have close to a thousand registered members, so if the merger is approved, they would become one of the largest forces in the territory.
The electronic consultation will end today, after which, if the union materializes, a transitional directive will be established, to then give way to an internal election.
“We are in the middle of the process right now. This started today at 9 a.m., and ends tomorrow at 9 p.m. Both days you can vote until 9 p.m. At that moment we will know the decision of the militancy to unify the Frente Amplio, therefore, it is a very important milestone, not only at the regional level but at the national level,” said the interim regional coordinator of the Democratic Revolution, Katterina Osorio. .
At the end of January, the regional board of directors of the community resigned from their positions, and around thirty members left the party, due to differences with the central level regarding the way in which decisions have been made, especially , with regard to the Ñuble Region, where after having two presidential delegates from its ranks, they were replaced by a liberal militant.
“From the central level and in all the regions, all the directives and all the coordinations are ensuring that all the militancy participates and casts their vote regarding this unification, since it is essential to generate more strength in the political spaces to be able to move forward more quickly. and with more strength,” Osorio added.
The leader mentioned that they are scheduled to meet today with the Social Convergence coordinators to await both parties for the result of this plebiscite, “which has us all quite anxious about the result. In addition, we will be clear about how much militancy was involved in him.”
He added: “we have to understand that there is a proposal, this is a proposal that seeks to respond to the demands of the country at this time, and we are in a process of construction and growth both as a party and as a community of the Frente Amplio, which urges us permanently to face these types of challenges. We must live up to the needs of the people, especially those whom we intend to represent as a political space, and we must be prepared to transform and grow permanently.”
Finally, he said, “regardless of the results we have from the plebiscite, at this moment the mere exercise of carrying it out and working on this process has generated greater unity for us as left-wing parties, and helps us grow more and more to be at the level of the social development that the country needs, of which we intend to be front-line participants. We are very clear that the principles and bases of both parties are very similar, and we will always be able to continue working together. Our first challenge, if the merger occurs, would be to strengthen ourselves internally as a party to be able to work safely, and then focus on what is coming soon, which is the municipal elections. Also generate all the necessary and pertinent alliances here in the region to be able to enhance that force. We would have to do that now,” he concluded.

From Convergencia Social, its regional president, Francisca Leyton, stated that “the unification of our parties is part of a larger political and social process that has been occurring in Chile for more than a decade. The fight for a dignified life within the framework of a democratic republic and a fair economy has been very important for those of us who are active in the Frente Amplio. Today’s plebiscite has as its center a deep strategic reflection on what is the best path to follow to build that country that is more dignified and fair for all. That is its main importance.”
According to Leyton, “unity is a possible path, but it is not opened or sealed with the result of the plebiscite, because it has been built for a long time and will continue to be a challenge tomorrow. We cannot turn a deaf ear to the history of our country. What yes, we are very happy to be able to decide together on this path, because it strengthens our action both to continue forward in our daily deployment in every corner of the country and reaffirms our commitment to the transformative government of President Gabriel Boric.”
