2023-09-19 14:15:00

The Children’s Committee of the Parliament of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation unanimously approved on Tuesday a draft decree which prohibits all forms of violence once morest children hosted in structures authorized, approved, subsidized or organized by the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.

The text targets physical, psychological and verbal violence. It will apply to teachers, instructors, educators and other workers in schools, nurseries, youth support services, sports clubs, etc.

The decree is in no way intended to stigmatize professionals who, in the vast majority, already work with kindness towards children, Minister Bénédicte Linard (Ecolo) underlined on Tuesday during the debate on its text in committee.

In reality, he intends to bring Belgium into compliance with several recommendations from various international bodies which have been urging the country for 20 years to adopt texts formally prohibiting all educational violence once morest children.

This ban on violence will now appear in full in the authorization, approval or subsidizing conditions of all these institutions which welcome or address children.

The adoption of the text will be accompanied by information campaigns aimed at professionals. The ONE’s budgets will also be increased in the years to come to better train stakeholders.

The decree should be definitively approved in plenary session within 15 days.
