According to reports, the Ministry of Interior is planning to sharply increase visa renewal fees in Kuwait from next year. The proposal is to increase the fee by three times the current amount. A local newspaper reported that the final report on the iqama fee hike has been submitted to Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Sheikh Talal for approval.
Earlier this kind of proposal was made several times but the decision was postponed. Current visa renewal fee in Kuwait is less than other Gulf countries. Meanwhile, if the proposals are accepted, it will be a big setback for the expatriates including the Malayalis.
The Kuwaiti government is moving towards tough decisions with the aim of adjusting the labor market and reducing the demographic imbalance. It is estimated that if the level of foreign population is not limited proportionally to the population of the natives, the problems including unemployment faced by the young generation in Kuwait cannot be solved.
