The intensive use of electronic devices, especially screens, demands more on the eyes than before they existed. And, for example, there are people who spend all day in front of a computer, causing damage to their vision.

To know more: Do not scratch your eyes: it will always be dangerous for your vision

If this occurs, you could be at risk for Computer Vision Syndrome (VIS). The American Optometric Association defines it as “a set of ocular and visual signs and symptoms related to the use of electronic devices for a long time.”

Studies published in the scientific journals Medical Practice and Reviews and Employment Relation Today establish that the risk of suffering from this syndrome is 90% in those who spend more than three hours a day in front of the screens of electronic devices.

”Among the symptoms of SVI are visual fatigue, eye fatigue or pain, dryness, tearing, irritation, blurred vision, slowness to focus at different distances, diplopia, photophobia, pain in the neck, back, shoulders, hands and wrists ”explained Reinaldo Acosta, director of the Optometry program at El Bosque University.

Computer SVI affects millions of people around the world. A study carried out by Sánchez-Brau, in workers with presbyopia in 2021 in Spain, determined a prevalence of 74.3% and was significantly associated with having an inappropriate neck posture and having inadequate lighting in the workplace.

“The symptoms are exacerbated by excessive work in near vision, if there are uncorrected refractive errors (myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism), motor problems or accommodative alterations,” adds Acosta.

To counteract these symptoms, the American doctor of Optometry, Jeffrey R. Anshel, a graduate of the University of Illinois, created the 20-20-20 rule, which consists of resting every 20 minutes looking into the distance (20 feet equivalent to 6 meters). for 20 seconds.

Other prevention measures are carrying out periodic visual examinations, ensuring appropriate optical correction, correct ergonomic position, lighting according to the tasks performed and being aware of the need for frequent blinking.
