Protesting PS5 Players Now Plan Permanent Blackout, Meaning No GTA 6 or Wolverine

Protesting PlayStation 5 users have escalated a planned one-week console blackout into an indefinite boycott. The action targets Sony’s active user metrics and its decision to phase out physical game production by January 2028, putting major upcoming titles including GTA 6 and Marvel’s Wolverine at the center of the dispute.

From One-Week Boycott to Indefinite Console Unplugging

The preservation community group DoesItPlay initially called for a one-week boycott of PlayStation, asking participants to turn off their consoles or log out of the PlayStation Network from August 23 to 30.

“No logins, no play sessions, no purchases on any of Sony’s platforms.”

By August 24, however, organizers announced that the original seven-day window was merely a starting point. In updated messaging shared online, the group urged participants to keep their hardware powered down indefinitely until corporate leadership shifts its strategy.

“Everyone is encouraged to go indefinitely until Sony change course,” “Pedal to the metal or we won’t get anywhere!”

The protest specifically targets active user counts, a key performance metric for the hardware manufacturer. By keeping consoles unplugged, participants aim to depress engagement data while simultaneously cutting off spending across the PlayStation Store. Campaigners suggest participants should keep their consoles unplugged through 30th August as a minimum.

The Physical Media Debate and Sony’s 2028 Strategy

The grassroots uprising is driven primarily by Sony’s confirmed plan to end physical game production by January 2028. Organizers argue that this shift represents a widening chasm between the Japanese giant and its core consumer base, leaving collectors and preservationists vulnerable to digital-only storefront policies, as the company has grown further apart from its fan base.

This push toward digital-only ecosystems mirrors broader industry trends seen across PC storefronts like Steam and the Epic Games Store. Yet, industry analysts point out that digital purchases rarely equate to true ownership—something Steam had to clarify on its checkout page in 2024. While subscriptions like PC Game Pass have started offering short-term convenience for gamers who only want to play something for a while and don’t mind losing access after completing or growing tired of it, GOG remains a solitary major distributor offering complete ownership. A purchase of digital content on GOG grants offline installers that cannot be taken away from you, according to the company’s stated policy.

High-Stakes Releases Caught in the Crossfire

The timing of the blackout places some of the industry’s most anticipated software releases directly into the controversy. Major upcoming PlayStation 5 titles facing potential community friction include The Blood of Dawnwalker, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, Marvel’s Wolverine, Control Resonant, and GTA 6, among many others.

At the same time, separate factions within the gaming community are expressing their frustrations through even more radical disruptions. A leaker operating under the alias Cyberleek recently published gameplay clips and the entire map of Leonidas a week before GTA VI’s extended look trailer is set to come out on Netflix. Take-Two is already taking steps to find out who was behind the leaks, but only after it became apparent that the hacker apparently has a full working build of the much-anticipated game. Although Cyberleek did not mention anything about Sony’s plan to go fully digital, the individual opposed the decision to offer pre-selling digital copies of GTA VI and threatened to keep releasing leaks until the publisher issues a public apology and a concrete commitment to be better.

Corporate Response and the Path Forward

Sony most recently reported attracting around 125 million monthly active users, an increase year-over-year. Earlier in the week, a Push Square poll concluded 92% of enthusiasts believe PS Studios would benefit from new management after stories emerged it was rebooting development on spin-off game Horizon Hunters Gathering.

When speaking with investors regarding potential subscription cancellations and PS Plus boycotts, Sony CFO Lin Tao stated that the company is not seeing any impact on our business. Some community members have voiced skepticism toward a timed boycott for this exact reason, arguing that a boycott or blackout with an expiry date is meaningless, as Sony will simply wait it out. Some comments on DoesItPlay’s post suggested more drastic measures, like a mass cancellation of PSN subscriptions for three months or even mass refunds of pre-selling digital games, while others noted that the final week of August is ordinary with no major events or PlayStation-related launches, coinciding with Gamescom where many hardcore gamers would likely be away and at the convention anyway.
