FBC: Firebreak – A Conversation with Lead Designer, Aino Virtanen

Archyde News: Welcome, Aino. Thank you for joining us today to discuss FBC: Firebreak. The anticipation for this spin-off of Control is through the roof!

Aino Virtanen: Thank you for having me. We’re truly excited to finally share a bit more about FBC: Firebreak with the gaming community.

Stepping Into the Oldest House – A New Perspective

Archyde News: One of the most intriguing aspects is the co-op focus. How does experiencing the Oldest House as a team of first responders change the feel of the game compared to Jesse Faden’s solo journey?

aino Virtanen: It fundamentally shifts the dynamic. While Control was about individual power and overcoming the odds alone, Firebreak emphasizes teamwork, dialog, and strategic coordination. You’ll experience the Oldest House from a ground-level perspective. It’s about relying on your squad and utilizing each member’s unique abilities to survive the paranormal threats. The gameplay is about more than individual power. It is a survival game, using your team mates to make it through.

Archyde News: Can you elaborate on the gameplay? Will players have distinct roles within the team, or will it be a more flexible system?

Aino Virtanen: While we’re still refining some details, players will be able to tailor their loadouts and skills, allowing for diverse team compositions. Some may specialize in support, while others focus on damage output or crowd control. The key is to experiment and find what works best for your team’s playstyle in the face of the challenging encounters the Oldest House presents.

Bringing the Bureau Back from the Brink: Gameplay and Lore

Archyde News: Control was lauded for its unique atmosphere and telekinetic combat. how does Firebreak build on this foundation while adapting to a co-op habitat?

Aino Virtanen: We’re definitely retaining the core elements that made Control special. The surreal environments, the unsettling narrative, and the emphasis on telekinetic abilities are all present. Though, we’ve adapted the combat system to encourage teamwork. Abilities can be combined and the levels are designed to provide a constant experience of dread, testing not only your skills but your bravery.

Archyde News: The release on PlayStation Plus Extra from Day 1 is a important draw. What can players expect by taking advantage of this launch?

Aino Virtanen: PlayStation Plus Extra members will get immediate access to the full Firebreak experience. This includes all launch content, and we’re committed to providing regular updates and post-launch support. We want this to be a must-have for PlayStation 5 owners, and we’re working extremely hard to make that happen.

The Future of the FBC Universe

Archyde News: Remedy Entertainment has a proven track record of delivering compelling narratives. Will Firebreak expand on the lore of the control universe in any significant ways?

Aino Virtanen: Absolutely. while the gameplay is focused on co-op, the narrative is still integral. This is the way forward for Remedy and the way in which we want to grow. Players can expect to encounter new mysteries, uncover more about the FBC’s history, and perhaps even get some intriguing glimpses of familiar faces.

Archyde News: Thank you for your time, aino. For our readers, what is the single most exciting thing about FBC: Firebreak that you want them to know?

Aino Virtanen: The most exciting aspect is the chance to experience the Control universe with your friends. Coordinating with your team, battling the Hiss, and surviving in the Oldest House is an unparalleled experience made especially for a game like this! We hope that players come to the game with the same level of creativity and imagination that we did when we were building it.

Archyde News: That sounds extremely exciting! The co-op element promises a fresh addition to the universe.
