CHAIRMAN of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, will attend the general session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) which this time will be held in Switzerland. The 148th general session of the world parliamentary forum will discuss the big theme of world peace.
The 148th IPU Assembly will take place in Geneva, Switzerland, on 23-27 March 2024. All IPU legal entities, including the Governing Council, Standing Committee, Committee on Human Rights of Parliamentarians and Middle East Issues, as well as the Women’s Parliamentary Forum, and the Members’ Forum The Youth Parliament will meet on this occasion.
The 148th IPU General Assembly took the theme Parliamentary Diplomacy: Building Bridges for Peace and Understanding. The IPU session provides a platform for world parliamentarians to consider, exchange views and mobilize action related to the general theme of the session.
“Parliament must strengthen collective efforts to ensure that everyone, regardless of their background, lives in peace,” said Puan, Thursday (21/3/2024). The IPU adopted the theme of peace considering that 56 countries will experience armed conflict in 2023, including Russia-Ukraine and Palestine-Israel.
According to Puan, the IPU Assembly will provide a much-needed space for parliamentary dialogue and diplomacy at the global, regional and bilateral levels as a complement to the UN and other multilateral forums. “In this challenging time, members of parliament must play a role in creating peace,” stressed Bung Karno’s grandson.
Apart from taking part in the 148th IPU general debate, Puan will attend the agenda of the Forum of Women Parliamentarians or the forum of IPU women parliamentarians. In this forum, members also discussed the issue of peace for women.

“As parliament, it is our duty to ensure that women participate in peace negotiations,” said Puan. “Female parliamentarians must work together to encourage women’s leadership in achieving lasting peace,” continued the Chair of the 144th IPU General Session.
On the sidelines of the 148th IPU General Assembly, Puan will hold a bilateral meeting with the President of the IPU, Tulia Ackson. Puan and the DPR RI delegation will also attend an invitation to break the fast together with Watapri PTRI (Permanent Mission of the Republic of Indonesia) Geneva.
During her working visit to Switzerland, Puan was accompanied by Deputy Chair of the DPR BKSAP Gilang Dhiela Fararez, Deputy Chair of Commission IX DPR Charles Honoris, Deputy Chair of Commission X DPR Agustina Wilujeng Pramestuti, Member of Commission V DPR Irine Yusiana Roba Putri, and Member of Commission X DPR Vanda Sarundajang.
