The upper part of the stands of the “Monumental” stadium in the Chilean capital, Santiago, collapsed during the training of the Colo Colo team, which is one of the famous teams and has a footballing reputation not only in Chile but among South American clubs.
During a training session for the team, a large number of fans attended, and the training witnessed great enthusiasm from the fans, and no one expected that this collapse would occur in the stadium, where a quarrel broke out between the spectators.
Part of the upper stand began to collapse over the heads of Colo Colo fans, and the training session was immediately terminated and the news is according to the local press in Chile that there have been no deaths so far and no one was seriously injured.
Firefighters rushed to the scene as well as emergency medical care providers who went to help the injured, who are estimated by the Chilean media in the hundreds.
The Monumental Stadium is one of Chile’s most important stadiums, and it hosted two matches in the 2015 Copa America, which Chile won its title for the first time in its history. In 1993, due to similar problems, the stadium was modernized.
The most important items of the modernization were reducing its capacity to about 45 thousand spectators, which apparently was not enough to relieve the pressure on the stands, which led to the accident.
