Ukraine has surrounded thousands of Russian soldiers in the eastern town of Lyman, a very important stronghold of Moscow, in an operation that is still ongoing, a Ukrainian military spokesman said on Saturday.
The capture of this town, which Russia uses as a logistics and transportation hub for its operations in the north of the Donetsk region, would represent a major new setback for the Kremlin’s plan to seize the entire Donbass industrial region.
“The Russian group in the Lyman region is surrounded,” said Serhiy Cherivati, a spokesman for the eastern Ukrainian forces.
“Liman is important because it is the next step towards the liberation of Ukraine’s Donbass. It is an opportunity to go beyond Kremina and Severodonetsk. Psychologically, it (the town) is very important,” he added.
Cherivati added that there are in Liman between five thousand and 5500 Russian soldiers, but the number of the besieged forces may have decreased due to the losses among the soldiers trying to escape from the siege.
He said that the Russian forces are making unsuccessful attempts to break the siege.
“Some are surrendering, and they have many dead and wounded, but the process is not over yet,” he added.
