A company recovering old refrigerators in Bécancour is taking steps to counteract what is called planned obsolescence, particularly affecting household appliances. Quebec has just tabled a bill to this effect to better protect consumers.
The PureSphera recycler has therefore undertaken to dismantle old refrigeration appliances and offer for sale used parts such as baskets, egg compartments, door bins, shelves and other useful accessories where appearance for refrigerator. Until now, the company captured halocarbons from refrigerators to prevent them from being released into the atmosphere. For the moment, we are limited to offering accessory components, but more critical elements are coming.
We really want to offer, in fact, a circular economy on pieces of appearance devices for the moment, but we will also work on certain technical pieces, therefore mechanical or electrical, explains Mathieu Filion.
The second life operation for refrigerator parts has obtained the blessing of the GoRecycle organization, which oversees the recovery of cooling devices in Quebec.
GoRecycle supports reuse, promotes it, but it is really an initiative that comes from PureSphera which has been coordinated and accepted by GoRecycle in business procedures, explains the general manager of GoRecyle, Jules Foisy.
In line with bill number 29
This initiative is taken on the sidelines of the tabling in Quebec of a bill which will promote the durability and what is called the repairability of household appliances, among other things.
Through the organization Équiterre, the Bécancour recycler will put forward his point of view during consultations on bill number 29. He will suggest that consumers have access to the plan of their device with a description of the parts and their serial number to make things easier in case of repair.
