It is Putin’s first visit to a major international player since the start of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine in February 2022 and since the International Court of Justice issued an arrest warrant against him. The forum is overshadowed by the war between Israel and the radical Islamic Hamas. Representatives from 130 countries will take part in the two-day meeting in Beijing.

The “New Silk Road” project, started ten years ago by China’s President Xi, has led to the construction of ports, railway lines, airports and industrial parks in Asia, Europe, Africa and beyond. These projects are intended to give China better access to other countries’ markets.
