The official start of the restoration of the facades of the Palais de Justice was given on Monday on Place Poelaert in Brussels, 140 years after the inauguration of the building.

The restoration work began this summer and is divided into several phases.

The first will last approximately two years and will focus on the entire front façade of the Palais de Justice, which has suffered from wear and humidity problems for years. The facade will be cleaned, the stones will be restored and the security of the building will also be checked. For this work, custom cut stones from the original quarries in Burgundy, France will be used. They have the characteristic of being very resistant to compression, allowing them to be used for the extreme span of the central gantry. The pointing between the stones will also be largely renewed in order to avoid water infiltration problems in the future, while the peristyle and the main courtyard of the palace are also included in this first phase of restoration.
