Pyrros Dimas in “P”: “The main issue is stability” – 2024-05-11 00:24:59

No introduction is needed when we talk about Pyrros Dimas, a man who has written a brilliant history in sports and is rightly considered a legend of Weightlifting. He is one of the leading Greek athletes of all time, a three-time Olympic gold medalist (Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000) and a one-time bronze medalist at the Athens Olympic Games in 2004. To date, he is the only weightlifter with three Olympic gold medals and a copper one.

In the past he was a member of parliament with PASOK, but in recent years he has been in the “bays” of ND, with which he is running as a candidate in the European elections in June. Pyrros Dimas will be in Achaia tomorrow with his schedule including visits with unions and organizations, where he will send his message. Shortly before his arrival in the region, Pyrros Dimas spoke to “Peloponnisos” and referred to the stake for the Greeks one month before the ballot…

-We are almost a month before the European elections. What are the main issues at stake?
The main issue is stability. Not only in our country, but also in Europe. Populism and the extreme right are trying to strengthen their influence and influence the course of the Union at a time when geopolitical developments are more critical than ever. Correspondingly, in our country, the stake is in maintaining the stable development path that attracts investments, increases wages and highlights the country as a main pillar of stability in the region.

-The average Greek has difficulty with the basics, which are the supermarket, but also with electricity payments. What do you have to say to him?
The difficulties you mentioned do not concern only the average Greek, they are a pan-European problem. However. as we’ve seen in recent months, the de-escalation of inflation is rapid, while increases in the minimum wage are improving workers’ finances. I remind you that the prime minister has committed to a minimum wage of 950 euros until 2027. And the growth rates of the economy allow us to be optimistic.

-If you are elected, which areas will you focus on?
I will give weight to issues concerning the everyday life of citizens, especially in the regions that are currently lagging behind economically compared to others. I will certainly be active in the field of rights with an emphasis on all that our compatriots in Northern Epirus are experiencing. It goes without saying that the issues of sports, professional and amateur, are always high on my agenda.

-There is a lot of talk about the rise of the extreme right. Is it something that scares you?
The rise of the far right is something that scares me all the time. Right-wing populism finds its basis in the problems caused by large immigration flows, but also the rapid way in which societies are now changing. That is why I believe that beyond his defeat in the field of elections, it is incumbent on all of us who have a public voice to speak differently to people who are worried about the future.

-Why should Greeks vote for Pyrros Dimas?
I am asking the Greeks to vote for me because they know that I have always, in whatever I have done in my life, always put the national emblem in front. I ask them to give me the strength to bear this burden, the great responsibility of representing Greece in the European Parliament.
-Patra is a city that has a rich sports history. Is there scope for major sporting events to come here?
The truth is that in the given period of time, Patras is facing problems in the sports infrastructures and their maintenance. The taking over of the Pamploponnisian Stadium by the Municipality showed us that the maintenance and development of the infrastructure can be done with flexibility and speed, if more say is given to the local communities. Of course, Patras could successfully claim major sports events, as it did in 2019 with the Coastal Mediterranean Games. Personally, I am committed to join any effort undertaken to solve the problems in the city’s sports infrastructure.
