QS Releases 2023 Global University Rankings by Subject: HKU Faculty of Dentistry Tops Asia List

The latest “World University Rankings by Subject” has been released by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), an international higher education institution. The ranking looked at 15,700 courses in 1,594 universities around the world, covering 54 subjects, three more than last year. Hong Kong had 178 programs from nine institutions that ranked among the top 100 subjects globally, accounting for 56% of the total, which ties them for second place alongside the Netherlands, behind Singapore. Additionally, six disciplines from HKU ranked among the top ten globally. They are Dentistry, Education, Social Policy and Public Administration, ranked third, eighth, and tenth, respectively. Hong Kong scored lower than the global average, and the institutions were advised to prioritize international academic cooperation. Hong Kong’s University of Hong Kong ranked first in Hong Kong in Medicine and Life Sciences and Medicine.

A total of 178 programs from 9 institutions in Hong Kong ranked among the top 100 subjects in the world, accounting for 56% of the total, tied for second with the Netherlands, only next to Singapore.

Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), an international higher education institution, released the latest “World University Rankings by Subject”, covering a total of 15,700 courses in 1,594 universities around the world, involving 54 subjects, an increase of 3 subjects from last year. In addition to the four indicators used in the past: academic reputation, employer reputation, number of paper citations and “H index”. Some subject rankings this year also include the “International research network” (IRN) index. Hong Kong’s score is lower than the global average, and it still needs to strengthen its pursuit of international academic cooperation.

HKU’s three disciplines rank among the top ten in the world

Among the 178 courses in Hong Kong, only 14 subjects were promoted, but 120 subjects dropped, and 41 remained unchanged. Six other disciplines topped the list.amongHKUThere are three disciplines among the top ten in the world, including dentistry, education and social policy and public administration, ranking third, eighth and tenth respectively. Hong Kong also has 12 disciplines ranked among the top 20 in the world:

HKU’s Department of Dentistry wins the crown in Asia!

“Medicine” Subject Ranking

In the ranking list of Medicine (Medicine) disciplines, the University of Hong Kong ranked 31st in the world, up 9 places from last year, ranking first in Hong Kong. The Faculty of Medicine of Chinese University ranked 32nd. Professor Liu Zexing, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Hong Kong, expressed his joy at this:

“The teamwork of our medical colleagues is the key to success and we are delighted to be ranked 31st in the world, which is a recognition of the teamwork and professionalism of our staff in their pursuit of excellence.”

“Life Science and Medicine” Subject Ranking

In the ranking of the “Life Sciences & Medicine” subject (Life Sciences & Medicine), the University of Hong Kong has also jumped 20 places from the 49th place last year to the 29th place in the world, setting a historical record and ranking first in Hong Kong. CUHK ranked 51st, up 7 places from last year!

Hong Kong institutions need to prioritize international cooperation

Of the 178 subjects listed in Hong Kong, 56% are in the top 100, while in Singapore, 87% are in the top 100. Ben Sowter, senior vice president of QS, said that Hong Kong is still at the forefront of the world’s higher education field, and the ranking confirms that Hong Kong is still a research powerhouse. It is important that institutions should face the world when doing research, and give priority to international cooperation.



In summary, the latest “World University Rankings by Subject” from QS has revealed Hong Kong’s continued excellence in higher education, with 178 programs from 9 institutions ranking among the top 100 subjects in the world.
