QTS 5.1, QNAP’s New NAS Interface, Doubles Ethernet Speeds

QNAP, a leading NAS manufacturer, has released version 5.1 of its operating system, QTS. This new version is accessible for a good part of the brand’s NAS (compatibility will obviously depend on its age, as for Macs) and brings many new features.

QTS 5.1

QNAP lists some new features in his press release, and we can note a new interface for File Station. This is the graphical interface that allows you to manage the files on the NAS, including a new search engine. QNAP also offers a more efficient encryption function for SMB shares (unfortunately only usable with Windows 11 and Windows Server 2022) or the ability to proactively detect failures. Indeed, the system can detect possible failures in a RAID array (probably via SMART self-diagnosis) and decide to copy the data to a spare disk to avoid data loss, without human intervention.

Coming Soon to Synology: Accelerate Transfers to NAS with Two Cables

Among the significant novelties, it should be noted the support of the SMB Multichannel. This technology can double the speeds between a NAS and a computer – macOS supports it since a minor version of Big Sur – by parallelizing the transfers on two network interfaces. This solution therefore requires two independent network links (it is not a question of approval), both on the side of the NAS and of the clients. We will soon be offering you a file which will show the interest of the SMB Multichannel on the flows, with some details on the necessary equipment and the installation.

The option with an updated NAS.

Finally, note that the update to QTS 5.1 can be done on the NAS itself or by directly downloading the system to the site de QNAP.
