“Quebec’s Minimum Wage Increase to $15.25 Sparks Debate on Fair Wages and Business Impact”

“I think that $15.25 is a balanced, responsible position that is respectful of our objective to ensure that the minimum wage is the equivalent of 50% of the average hourly wage in Quebec,” explained the Minister, Monday, on the airwaves of Noovo Info.

This $1 increase in the minimum wage represents the largest increase since 1995, when the previous hourly rate was $14.25 in 2022.

Organizations believe, however, that this increase in the minimum wage is not enough, when it would take $18 an hour to live with dignity in Quebec.

“Even if it is never enough, it is a decision which is respectful of the capacities of companies and the increase in the purchasing power of employees”, replied Mr. Boulet.

The Minister of Labor recalls that other measures have been announced by the government to counter inflation, including the famous $400 to $600 checks and tax cuts.

However, a restaurateur remains concerned about the increase in the minimum wage, which does not seem to support SMEs.

“Customers will also react when we increase the price on our menus,” lamented the owner of Kyoto restaurant in Montreal.

A passer-by pointed out to Noovo Info that the less well-off pay the same price as the more well-off and that the minimum wage will only increase the price of products.

“So it doesn’t do much.”
