Rafael Camara to debut for Haas at Sao Paulo GP as Esteban Ocon is out

Rafael Camara will make his Formula 1 race debut at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix this weekend, stepping into the Haas VF-26 earlier than planned after the team confirmed that Esteban Ocon will not return to a race seat for the remainder of the season, motorsport.com reported.

The sudden driver change follows increasingly strained relations between Ocon and the American-owned outfit. A heated argument during the Mexico City Grand Prix weekend proved to be the final breaking point for Team Principal Ayao Komatsu, who decided to bench the French driver immediately.

Reserve driver and Toyota protege Ryo Hirakawa stepped in for the remainder of the Mexico weekend. Hirakawa delivered a strong performance on short notice, finishing 10th to score a single championship point on his F1 debut.

Camara was already under contract to drive for Haas for the 2027 season. The Ferrari junior currently leads the Formula 2 drivers’ standings and thoroughly impressed the Haas engineering team during a private test earlier this year.

The final confirmation of Camara’s debut arrived on Tuesday afternoon, though the Brazilian youngster had already been placed on standby in Mexico City. He will line up alongside Ollie Bearman at Interlagos.

Preparation and Testing Mileage in Previous Generation Machinery

Although Camara has never driven a current 2026 Formula 1 car in a competitive session, he arrives at his home grand prix with considerable seat time in older machinery. Under Formula 1 regulations allowing Testing of Previous Cars, Camara completed five separate outings.

Four of those tests took place at the wheel of Ferrari’s SF-25. The fifth test saw him pilot the Haas VF-25 during an August run at Portimao in Portugal, a session that proved instrumental in convincing team leadership of his readiness.

Team Principal Ayao Komatsu addressed the high-stakes roster decision in an official statement. “We have now notified Esteban Ocon that he will not return to a race seat with TGR Haas F1 Team this season,” Komatsu explained.

“Such decisions are never made lightly, as was the case in Mexico City – but then, as now, we feel this is firmly in the best interest of the team moving forward. The conversations that ultimately unfolded between the team and Esteban remain an internal matter, and we will continue to respect the private nature of closed-door situations.”

Komatsu added context regarding the team’s choice for Interlagos: “Looking ahead, we’ve chosen Rafael Camara to drive alongside Ollie Bearman at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. Having excelled in his TPC outing in August, we know Rafael’s capabilities and we’re looking forward to welcoming him into the team this weekend and working with him through his Formula 1 debut driving the VF-26 in Brazil.”

Knock-on Effects for Ferrari and Remaining 2026 Rounds

The abrupt lineup shakeup at Haas has also triggered adjustments within the Ferrari driver development program. Friday morning’s opening Free Practice session at Interlagos was originally allocated to Camara. That session will now go to Swedish driver Dino Beganovic, providing him with valuable experience behind the wheel of a contemporary Formula 1 car.

Questions remain regarding who will occupy the Haas race seat alongside Bearman for the final three rounds of the 2026 season in Las Vegas, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi. Team insiders indicate that the remaining races will likely see a shared approach utilizing both Camara and Hirakawa, depending on availability and ongoing evaluation.
