RAFAEL Nadal canceled his appearance at the Monte Carlo Masters, Thursday (4/4), a tournament that was supposed to be a comeback for the winner of 22 Grand Slam titles.

“Unfortunately, I have to tell you that I will not appear in Monte Carlo. My body does not allow that,” the 37-year-old said on his social media.

The 11-time Monte Carlo Masters champion missed almost the entire 2023 season due to injury and only appeared at the Brisbane International this year when his hip injury recurred.

Nadal lost to fellow Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz in an exhibition match in Las Vegas before withdrawing from the Indian Wells Masters.

“In fact, even though I work hard every day in the hope of being able to play again soon in a very important tournament for me, the fact is, I couldn’t play today,” said Nadal.

“You have no idea how hard it was for me to decide not to play here.”

“The only thing I can do is accept this and try to look to a more enjoyable future when I can play in better conditions,” he continued.

Nadal last won the Monte Carlo Masters in 2018. He lost in the semifinals in 2019, the quarterfinals in 2021, and was absent in 2020, 2022 and 2023.

The Spaniard plans to use the Monte Carlo Masters as preparation for the French Open, which he has won 14 times. (AFP/Z-1)
