Today, the 16th (Saturday), rain clouds have been developing mainly along the mountains since around noon, and some thunderclouds can also be seen. In some places, heavy rain was observed. Watch for locally extremely heavy rain, lightning and gusty winds late tonight. If rain clouds develop more than expected or stay in the same place, there is a possibility of warning-level heavy rain.

Atmospheric conditions are very unstable

Today, the 16th (Saturday), warm and humid air is flowing towards a front extending from the Sea of Japan to the southern part of Tohoku, making the atmospheric condition extremely unstable.
Although many places were sunny in the morning, rain clouds and thunderclouds developed around the mountains of the Kanto region, around Nagano and Niigata prefectures, northern Kyushu, and the main island of Okinawa from around noon.

Heavy rain was observed in Sado City (Aikawa), Niigata Prefecture, at 37.5 mm in the hour up to 2:21 p.m., and in Kunigami Village (Oku), Okinawa Prefecture, 30.5 mm in the hour up to 4 p.m. .

At 4:43 p.m., a “tornado warning” was announced for Oita Prefecture. The central and western parts of Oita Prefecture are experiencing weather conditions that are prone to strong gusts such as tornadoes.

Possibility of warning heavy rain

Okinawa and Kyushu to Kanto-Koshin will continue to experience very unstable atmospheric conditions late tonight. There will be rain and thunderstorms mainly along the mountains, and there will be heavy rain in some places. It is predicted that there will be “extremely heavy rain” that will cause roads to flood quickly in localized areas.

Because the winds in the sky that sweep away rain clouds are weak, once it starts raining, it may continue to rain in the same places, or the rain clouds may develop more than expected, resulting in warning-level heavy rain.

Please be careful of lightning, tornadoes, strong wind gusts, and hail.

What kind of rain is very heavy rain?

Very heavy rain refers to rain with an hourly rainfall of more than 50 mm and less than 80 mm. This is an image of rain falling like a waterfall and continuing to fall. Also, umbrellas are completely useless, and about half of the people sleeping inside a wooden house notice the rain. Driving outside is dangerous because the water is spraying all over the place, making the area whitish and reducing visibility.

In addition, 50 mm of rain per hour means that if the rainwater does not flow to another place and accumulates, the rain that falls will be 50 mm high. If 50mm of rain falls on 1 square meter in an hour, the amount of rain will be 50 liters. For example, the area of an open umbrella is approximately 1 square meter, so if you hold the umbrella for an hour, the amount of rain that is equivalent to 50 milk cartons will hit the umbrella.

However, in reality, when rainwater from the surrounding area collects, it can accumulate in excess of the amount of rain that fell at that spot. In areas where extremely heavy rain is expected, please be careful of landslides, flooding of low-lying areas, and rising and flooding rivers.
