Rampant Embezzlement in Charleroi Courthouse: Unveiling the Corruption Risk

2023-10-18 19:50:00

According to SudInfo, an employee of the Charleroi courthouse allegedly stole €450,000 worth of evidence over the years. He was reportedly arrested following an investigation “for theft and embezzlement by a civil servant”, and placed under arrest warrant. According to our colleagues, it was the disappearance of evidence to be returned to people involved in various cases that tipped the alarm.

In the exhibits of a courthouse, we find everything: computer equipment, telephones, drugs, keys and vehicle documents from seized cars, etc. But above all, this type of embezzlement raises questions regarding the risk of “corruption” of courthouse employees: if they have access to evidence and can steal them to gain money, they might also tamper with them, make them disappear or render them unusable for remuneration.

According to SudInfo, the prosecution did not wish to comment.
