Fascination helmets

I don’t know about you, but when I was a kid I really loved drawing Formula 1 driver’s helmets.

I then sat down with pen and paper and copied the helmets of Michael Schumacher, Jacques Villeneuve, Ralf Schumacher, Heinz-Harald Frentzen, Mika Häkkinen and Co.

From time to time, Formula 1 also pays homage to the past and special drivers with special helmets that revive old designs. In our photo series there are a few real cream pieces.

Less activity on the starting grid?

The safety of the guests is always one of the greatest assets at a motorsport event. Although every ticket says “Motorsport is dangerous”, motorsport is dangerous, but the FIA does not want a prominent guest or VIP to be seriously injured on a track.

At the Spanish Grand Prix, there was an ugly moment in Formula 1 when the field went on the formation lap and there were still a few guests on the sidelines, including soccer star Neymar Jr.

This has now sparked a discussion that not only affects Formula 1, but also other top international racing series: are there too many people on the starting grid before the race?

It could definitely be the case that there will be less activity soon, because “protecting the health and well-being of all participants, be they guests, officials or teams, is the top priority for the FIA”.

You can read about what could change and what impression FIA President Mohammed bin Sulayem got in the article by my colleagues Matt Kew and Mario Fritzsche.

The best project of his career?

Fernando Alonso has competed for many teams in Formula 1, including heavyweights like Ferrari and McLaren. He even became world champion twice in a Renault. Still, none of them compare to Aston Martin when you hear him talk like that these days, including on Sky UK.

“Everything is fine. To be honest, I can’t remember any other time in my career where I had so much confidence in a team and in a project itself.”

This is of course a slap in the face for all previous teams and also fans of the teams, especially for Renault, with whom he just won two titles. But of course he is already thinking a bit ahead, because it is not certain whether Aston Martin will be a serious title contender next season, Alonso will be 42 in a month, but he is in very good spirits:

“Since it’s more of a medium and long-term project, I don’t know if I’ll be driving. It’s always in my mind that yes, because as long as I feel fast and I’m having fun, why should I stop? But I’m enjoying it at the moment.”

We’re enjoying it too, Fernando, we’re enjoying it right now.

Insight prevails

Saturday in Montreal was really difficult for Charles Leclerc. At the start of Q2, you quickly noticed that the track was drying so much that from the driver’s point of view you could go on slicks. He wanted that too.

Unfortunately, at this point his race engineer Xavier Marcos Padros took a different view and denied him the soft tyres. Leclerc had to bet on intermediates for a time, then switched to slicks, couldn’t get a lap together and slid off the track at the end of the season with the new intermediates and was thrown out. That really hurt.

There was another very public and unfortunate discussion on the pit radio regarding his tire request, and in the interviews immediately afterwards Leclerc also vented his anger, I think rightly so. With a little distance, however, things look different, as Ferrari team boss Frederic Vasseur had already discussed with some selected media after the race:

“We had a good discussion and he [Leclerc] said, “Okay, I was wrong.”

“You know I always try to protect my guys – the drivers – for the team. I can understand very well when they get out of the car after bad results and someone asks: were you happy with that strategy? Certainly say no,” says Vasseur, adding:

“The most important thing is that I think sometimes it’s better to talk to the team beforehand. We have that [nach dem Qualifying] did. It was very calm, very constructive and very direct.”

Sometimes that’s part of it, isn’t it? That you get upset, then think about it again and realize that you’ve overshot the mark a bit. I think that makes Charles Leclerc very human.

My colleague Norman Fischer has summarized this whole topic again in an article for you.

Fabric for the breakfast table

If you want to get a little carried away this Wednesday morning, I recommend the Formula 1 podcast “Starting Grid“, because yesterday the video for the new episode came out on the Formel1.de YouTube channel out.

Sophie Affeldtour data expert Kevin Hermann and I also talked about Ferrari, who for us are both winners and losers of Canada in their own way. A bit odd when you read it that way, but if you watch or listen to it, I think you’ll quickly understand why.

Have fun!
