Rapid Growth of E-commerce Licenses in the UAE: Insights from the National Economic Register

The National Economic Register of the Ministry of Economy revealed that the number of e-commerce licenses registered in the UAE in July amounted to 9,200 licenses, a growth of 15%, compared to July of last year.

The data of the National Economic Registry showed the registration of 1,200 new licenses during the same period, in a variety of fields, most notably electronics, communication devices, modern technology, food commodities and home appliances, in addition to some services that are in high demand such as travel, organizing events, transportation and shipping.

According to the data, the local licensing authorities granted 4,893 licenses for trading goods and services via social media such as “Facebook” and “Twitter”, constituting more than 53% of the total licenses.

The licenses were distributed among different sectors, including about 101 licenses for a platform and an electronic merchant in the sale of clothes, and 88 licenses in the household appliances and appliances sector, and food commodities, about 43 licenses, while the electronic licenses in various equipment and devices amounted to 35 licenses, and the number of licenses for “online” merchants in the sale of jewelry, publications and books reached 16 licenses each, and the remaining are various licenses.

Abu Dhabi acquired the largest share by more than 80%, and trading through communication came in first place with about 4,807 licenses, followed by licenses for general trading through websites.

The emirate of Ras Al Khaimah came second with about 174 permits, followed by the emirate of Sharjah with about 172 permits, then the emirate of Dubai with about 118 permits, and the remaining licenses were distributed between Ajman, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain.
