A person who lives in England has been diagnosed with the monkeypox virus (monkeypox, in English), according to the UK Health Security Agency reported on Saturday. It is rare to detect cases of this disease and, according to the British National Health Service, patients generally recover within a few weeks.
The infected patient is isolated and treated in London by an infectious disease specialist. He recently returned from a trip to Nigeria, where British authorities believe he may have contracted the disease.
It was not the first case in the UK.
The first case of the disease in the UK was confirmed in 2018. All recorded cases were in people returning from travel from West Africa.
As a precaution, Britain’s National Health Service said it would trace the patient’s last contacts in the country, including those who traveled on the same plane from Nigeria.
Symptoms of the disease include fever, headache, chills, fatigue, and rashes.
“It is important to stress that monkeypox does not spread easily between people and the overall risk to the general public is very low,” Colin Brown told Britain’s The Guardian newspaper. He is Director of Clinical and Emerging Infections at the UK Health Safety Agency.

Monkeypox was discovered in 1958, when symptoms of a smallpox-like disease were identified in monkey communities. The first human case was recorded in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
