Four years following the Raspberry Pi 4, the new Pi 5 was made official this Thursday (28), with launch scheduled for the end of October, starting at US$60 for the model with 4 GB of memory. This is the first model with the brand’s own processor, developed in Cambridge.

The Raspberry Pi 5 follows on from the previous model, promising around 40 times faster than the original Raspberry Pi, launched in 2012. 14 million Raspberry Pi 4 have been sold in recent years.

One of the highlights is Broadcom’s 16nm AP derived from the 28nm BCM2711 AP found in the Raspberry Pi 4. There is a Arm Cortex-A76 quad core 64-bit processor with 2.4 GHz clock. The result is a faster Raspberry Pi that consumes less power for the same workload. Broadcom’s VideoCore VII GPU features open-source Mesa drivers and integrates an updated VideoCore Hardware Video Scaler.

The device features two 4Kp60 HDMI video outputs, 4Kp60 HEVC decoder, dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0 LE, as well as two USB 3.0 and two USB 2.0 ports. There are also traditional Gigabit Ethernet ports with PoE+ support, PCIe 2.0 and the standard 40-pin Raspberry Pi GPIO connector.

The Pi 5 model is built on disaggregated chiplet architecture, so only the SD card, SDRAM, HDMI and PCI Express interface are provided by the AP. Everything else is offloaded to a separate I/O controller.

The third component of the chipset is the Renesas DA9091 “Gilmour” power management IC with eight separate switching power supplies.

Similar in aesthetics to its predecessor, with almost the same dimensions, the internal design changes with the removal of the board’s four-pole analog composite audio and video connector. In place of the connector there are two FPC connectors. A pair of mounting holes for a heatsink have also been created.

The 8 GB model costs US$80, and there are also additional accessories such as the case, for US$10, 27W USB-C power adapters and active cooling, additional at varying prices.
