According to the agency Autostat, as of January 1 of this year, there were 795 thousand cars of Chinese brands in the territory of the Russian Federation. This is 1.7% of total cars registered in the country. Sales of Chinese cars in Russia began in 2004, when Great Wall and the defunct Tianye brand were the first to enter our market.

More than a quarter (28%) of the “Chinese” in our country are Chery brands: sales have been going on since 2005, and as of January 1, 221,000 cars were registered. In second place is Lifan (154 thousand), although this company went bankrupt back in 2020 and after that only sold cars from the warehouse. Subsequently Lifan passed over under the wing of the Geely concern, but never returned to Russia.

Geely (152 thousand) and Great Wall (119 thousand) follow in the ranking, and Haval closes the top five (70 thousand cars), although this brand appeared in Russia only in 2015. There are only 79,000 passenger cars of all other Chinese brands (less than 10% of the total). Now the brands Changan, Exeed, Dongfeng (aka DFM), FAW, GAC and JAC are also represented in Russia, and in different years another fifteen different brands tried to work with us, some of which have long become history.

The most common Chinese model in Russia was a crossover Chery Tiggo first generation (pictured). Such cars were sold from 2005 to 2020, their total fleet at the beginning of this year consisted of 57 thousand copies. The second place is taken by the SUV Lifan X60 (54 thousand), the third – a frame SUV Great Wall Hover H3 (52 thousand). Next comes the sedan. Lifan Solano (51.5 thousand) and the Great Wall Hover H5 SUV (35.5 thousand). All of these models are no longer sold on the Russian market.
