RB Leipzig beat 1. FC Köln on Matchday 22 – Nkunku, Olmo and Angeliño score dream goals

FC coach Steffen Baumgart had to do without his star striker Anthony Modeste. The 14-time goalscorer of the current Bundesliga season was not available due to illness and was replaced by Sebastian Anderson. However, the Swedish offensive player could not prove himself because RB Leipzig was increasingly dominating the game.

Despite the dominance of the home side, the fans of the reigning runners-up waited a long time for their team to have a dangerous chance. In the 23rd minute of the game, Marvin Schwäbe’s box almost rang. Amadou Haidara counterattacked quickly and passed the ball to Angeliño, who in turn turned on Christopher Nkunku on the left side of the penalty area. The Frenchman crossed, but Luca Kilian saved inches from the line.

The next attack worked better. Timo Hübner caused a free-kick just before the edge of the penalty area by fouling Dani Olmo. From the point of view of 1. FC Köln, this should have fatal consequences, because Nkunku stepped up and transformed fantastically into the upper left corner for Billy Goats goalkeeper Schwäbe.

Baumgart praises opponents Leipzig: “Getting better and better under the Tedesco”

With this tight lead we went into the cabins. Cologne looked more alert at the beginning of the second half, but the optimism didn’t last long. Haidara served fellow midfielder Olmo, who shot the ball from around 20 meters and a half-right position into the far bottom corner (54′).

Almost immediately afterwards, Leipzig finally robbed the guests of their hopes of winning a point. Nkunku launched a counterattack and eventually forwarded to Olmo. The Spaniard kept a cool head and put the penalty spot across to Angeliño, who effortlessly slotted in (57′).

Steffen Baumgart reacted to the events and made three changes, including Dejan Ljubicic who got his chance (62nd) and knew how to convince. The Cologne team finally dared a few times in front of the opponent’s goal, but they couldn’t pose any great danger. In the last minute of the game, FC then rewarded themselves for their efforts and headed in the person of Tim Lemperle, who had previously been substituted on, to make it 3-1.

The votes for the game:

Péter Gulácsi (RB Leipzig): “Overall, it was a good game for us against a direct competitor for international places. We had good possession and pressing, defended well. You can see that we’ve made progress in the last few weeks.”

Dani Olmo (RB Leipzig): “I’m feeling good and confident. I’m playing more and more. Now it’s about staying fit so I can help the team even more.”

Salih Özcan (1. FC Cologne): “We didn’t use the space in the first half and ended up losing through three counterattacks.”

Steffen Baumgart (Coach 1. FC Cologne): “Congratulations to Leipzig. We’re not happy with the result. Overall, I’m happy with the performance of my team.”

The tweet about the game:

The Spanish duo around Olmo and Angeliño played a key role in today’s success. Both players scored one goal each.

That was noticeable: defeat against Bayern? No problem!

Despite last weekend’s bankruptcy, RB Leipzig presented themselves as extremely focused, motivated and enthusiastic about the game. After the score was 3-0 after just one hour, the Red Bulls didn’t give up the game and played the win comfortably home. Especially the trio Nkunku, Olmo and Angeliño stood out.

The stats: zero

Domenico Tedesco has never lost to 1. FC Köln in his professional coaching career. It was clear pretty early on Friday evening that this series would be extended.
