Recent Developments in Niger’s Junta and ECOWAS’s Plan for Intervention

Niger’s junta has filled important positions in the armed forces. As the spokesman for the military rulers announced on television yesterday evening, putsch general Moussa Salao Barmou will become the new chief of staff of the armed forces. Previously, Barmou was the head of the special forces and the mastermind behind the coup a week ago. In addition to Barmou, other important positions in the army and air force were also occupied by supporters of the putschists.

After the coup d’état in Niger, in which the democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum was overthrown by officers of the Presidential Guard, the West African community of states ECOWAS called for President Bazoum’s release last Sunday.

Plan for military intervention?

If the country does not return to constitutional order within a week, ECOWAS will take action. According to the French broadcaster RFI, the military chiefs of the ECOWAS states drafted a plan for a possible military intervention yesterday.
