Recent Strike at Geneva Airport: Impact on Airlines and Passengers

2023-07-01 19:47:31

After the lifting of the strike at Genève Aéroport, the day of Saturday was marked by the return to normal. The financial consequences of the social movement are not yet known, but should especially weigh on the airlines which had to cancel flights.

Of the nearly 400 flights scheduled for Friday, 160 were canceled, a rate of around 40%. But on Saturday, when 53,000 passengers were expected, airport employees had returned to work and the few flight cancellations of the day had no connection with the strike the day before.

As for the economic consequences, Geneva Airport does not wish to comment. The strike having only lasted a few hours and the long-haul planes, the main providers of money, having been able to take off and land, the shortfall should not be too heavy.

On the other hand, airlines suffer from these flight cancellations. Swiss, which had to give up 21 flights to Geneva on Friday, does not yet have precise figures, but estimates the consequences of the strikes in Europe at several tens of millions of francs.

“This year, the repeated strikes across Europe are having a financial impact. Tens of millions of francs are already falling on the side of the airlines. Not only is this an impact for the companies but also for the passengers and the partners who operate”, said Romain Vetter, director of the Swiss company in French-speaking Switzerland, in Forum on Saturday.

No financial compensation

A priori the airlines will not be able to request financial compensation from the airport since it is an event of “extraordinary circumstance”, in the same way as a storm or technical problems for example.

On the other hand, the airport had to respond to a request, in particular from the company Easyjet, to extend the landing times. Thus, three planes landed after midnight, including one exceptionally between 12:30 a.m. and 2:00 a.m.
