Maruch Santíz is a Tzotzil photographer, writer, embroidery and textile designer, and actress. Guest of honor of the Mexican pavilion at Filbo 2023.

«With his artistic work, Maruch seeks to document and vindicate the Tzotzil worldview and symbology using a minimalist aesthetic language. His projects have focused on exploring various aspects of Tzotzil culture: Tzotzil myths and beliefs that explain natural and social phenomena in various communities; the community medicinal herbalist used to cure various ills and discomforts; Tzotzil gastronomy and clothing as well as showing the flora and fauna of the region where he was born.

In each artistic project, Maruch carries out an immersive community research process in different Tzotzil regions, where he interviews and talks with its inhabitants, mainly old women, men, adults, and adults, to recover community knowledge. Subsequently, she seeks to capture the knowledge acquired using various media: photography, writing, the loom or the body. Her work has been exhibited in multiple galleries in Mexico City such as the OMR Gallery, the San Ángel Cultural Center) as well as in art spaces in the United States, England, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Iceland and Taiwan.

During the 1990s, Maruch Sántiz was recognized, within the Mexican artistic sphere, as the “indigenous revelation of the end of the century.”
