Remco Evenepoel (Soudal – Quickstep) crushed the 2023 edition of Liège-Bastogne-Liège. The Belgian, defending champion, dropped off his opponents following the Côte de la Redoute. Marc Hirschi meanwhile finished in a good 10th place.
Unrivaled. Remco Evenepoel, with the world champion’s jersey, gave a demonstration on La Doyenne. A class above, the 23-year-old Belgian had fun on the Ardennes roads by starting alone 29 km from the finish. He finished 1’06 ahead of Tom Pidcock and Santiago Buitrago.
At 23, the reigning world champion becomes the first rider to retain his title in Liège since Michele Bartoli in 1998. Best Swiss, Marc Hirschi has taken over from the Slovenian as leader of the UAE team. The 24-year-old Bernese finished in 10th place at 1’48.
A childhood dream
“It’s wonderful to do two out of two. Winning this beautiful race with this beautiful jersey, it’s magic“, declared the winner of the day following having been able to savor his success for a long time on the Quai des Ardennes by haranguing the public. The Belgian also admitted to having dreamed since his childhood of winning the Doyenne with the jersey of world champion.
The magnificent duel planned with Tadej Pogacar, recent winner of the Amstel Gold Race and the Flèche Wallonne. But the Slovenian had to put a cross on his desire for a hat-trick by falling following 85 km. The double winner of the Tour de France will have to have scaphoid surgery.
