Reconstruction of Cienfuegos Oil Refinery: Russian Specialists and Investment of $500 Million

An investment of 500 million dollars requires the reconstruction of the Cienfuegos oil refinery. In this sense, not a few Russian specialists study this process to carry out its modernization. The idea is that with the new advance a more complex refining process is allowed to help make better use of crude oil.

For this reason, Viktor Koronelli, Russian ambassador to Cuba, announced that, indeed, now there is talk of a possible reconstruction of the Cienfuegos refinery. He also expressed the diplomat, who is still discussing with Russian specialists whether the reconstruction would be done in whole or in part.

The truth is that it is the largest refinery in the country, owned by the state company CUPET. Therefore, already some Russian companies are supplying equipment for metallurgical works. Likewise, supplies of materials for thermal power plants are being made.

This Cienfuegos facility has a refining capacity of 65,000 barrels per day. However, the technology it uses is from the USSR of the 1980s.

Therefore, the refinery needs foreign capital to acquire new equipment and go beyond the simple refining process.

Precisely, thanks to this process, liquefied gas, diesel, gasoline and fuel oil, among others, are currently obtained.

If we do a little history we discover that the refinery was practically paralyzed in the 1990s with the disintegration of the Soviet Union. Many years later (in 2007) it was reopened by Raúl Castro and Hugo Chávez.

Russia again to the rescue…

It is no secret to anyone that given the increase in the fuel crisis in Cuba, the government is turning more and more to Russia. In this sense, the expansion of relations between Havana and Moscow is evident.

For his part, the Russian ambassador also announced that the car manufacturers of that country began negotiations for the commercialization of cars in Cuba.
