Lagos: Students in about 40 schools in Nigeria will carry school supplies in a separate bag along with their bag and textbooks. The proceeds from the sale of reusable bags can be used for students’ education.

An organization called the African Cleanup Initiative has set up such a system in schools for children who cannot afford to pay tuition fees.

The founder of the African Cleanup Initiative, Alexander Akhigbe, said that the aim of the organization is to make the country free of waste along with providing educational assistance to students from families facing financial crisis. He said that the money from the sale of the acres can be used to pay the salaries of the teachers and for the uniforms and other stationery items for the students.

The average annual fee in the schools is Rs 10,000. The school authorities said that it is possible to find enough money from the supplies brought by the students. The head teacher of My Dream Stead said that now more children are coming to the school than last year and due to the increase in the number of students, the classes have been shifted to another building.

The founder of the African Cleanup Initiative added that children started collecting garbage from the streets when their homes were deprived of sanitation and most areas are now litter-free.
