Red Hat Powers the Future of Supercomputing with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory as they Build El Capitan

Red Hat, Inc., a global leader in providing open source solutions, today announced that Red Hat Enterprise Linux it will be the operating system platform for El Capitan, the first exascale supercomputer of the National Nuclear Security Administration, the North American entity responsible for the security of nuclear arsenals. Designed to be the most powerful supercomputer in the world, El Capitan is located at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). As the catalyst for the El Capitan software stack, Red Hat Enterprise Linux provides a crucial connection to create supercomputers that operate in the cloud with artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) components. At the same time, the platform easily integrates with LLNL’s current technology environment, providing a simplified administration and user experience that ranges from traditional systems to state-of-the-art El Capitan infrastructure.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) will be the basis for El Capitan, the National Nuclear Security Administration’s first exascale supercomputer

For Gunnar Hellekson, vice president and general manager of Red Hat Enterprise Linux at Red Hat, the partnership strengthens the supermachine ecosystem and points to new directions in technology through open source. “The collaboration between Red Hat and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory exemplifies the indispensable nature of a reliable, consistent, and comprehensive Linux platform like Red Hat Enterprise Linux for some of the nation’s most essential research. We are proud to continue our 20+ year relationship with LLNL by extending the world’s leading enterprise Linux platform to what will soon be the world’s fastest exascale supercomputer,” he said.

When fully deployed in mid-to-late 2024, El Capitan is expected to reach a processing capacity of more than two (double precision) exaflops per second and will be used by all three of NNSA’s Tri-Labs (LLNL, Los Alamos National Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratory) to help address safety and reliability hurdles in the U.S. nuclear stockpile. The supercomputer and Tuolumne, an accompanying system that will be used for unclassified research, will also support research areas that include climate science, computational biology, material discovery, high-density physics, material modeling and more.

The Partnership

LLNL has a long history of partnership with Red Hat, having used RHEL as the framework for many of its systems, 11 of which make the Top 500 list of the world’s most powerful supercomputers. LLNL also uses Red Hat Enterprise Linux as the default operating system for several smaller supercomputers within tight collaboration networks, such as Tuolumne and RZAdams, to establish a standard operating environment across most lab systems.

Harmony between RHEL and LLNL is essential as high performance computing (HPC) strategies must be aligned with cloud-based systems. This applies especially to software environments, given that sustainability and accessibility are now vital for the functioning of these HPCs.

Plataforma Linux

By using the leading enterprise Linux platform as a global standard, LLNL is able to improve operational efficiency and flexibility, which are essential features for teams overseeing the day-to-day management and maintenance of supercomputer environments. This joint story between LLNL and Red Hat helps achieve even greater collaboration around the evolution of supercomputing, including developing best practices for connecting HPC scheduling tools and cloud orchestrators to align with the continued growth of computing technologies. cloud.
