That’s what it’s about

The Houthi rebels recently attacked several ships in the Red Sea.

A US Navy warship and several merchant ships have come under fire in the Red Sea, according to the US Department of Defense. The Pentagon said it would provide further details as they become available. The British military had previously reported a suspected drone attack and explosions in the Red Sea, without giving details.

Observers assume that the destroyer USS Carney wanted to come to the aid of the Bahamas-flagged merchant ship “Unity Explorer,” which had previously been attacked with a missile by the Houthi rebels.

Are Houthi rebels behind the attack?

The Pentagon did not provide any official information about who might be responsible for the attack on the USS Carney and the merchant ships. The Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen recently attacked ships in the Red Sea and fired drones and rockets towards Israel.

According to senior representatives of the US Department of Defense, Houthi rebels actually attacked the warship with several anti-ship missiles and drones, but the ministry has not yet officially confirmed this.

In a letter, the Houthis confessed to an attack – but spoke of having attacked Israeli ships. The attack on the USS Carney is not mentioned. They attacked two Israeli ships in the Bab al-Mandab Strait with a missile and a drone, Houthi military spokesman Jahja Sari said on Sunday. These are the ships “Unity Explorer” and “Number 9”.

Carney has already shot down various missiles and drones

The destroyer USS Carney entered service with the US Navy in 1997. In addition to a 127-millimeter gun and various other small-caliber weapons, the 154-meter-long ship also has several anti-ship missiles and also houses a helicopter. The ship has been operating in the eastern Mediterranean since October 8th and, according to the US military, has already shot down four cruise missiles and 15 drones that were launched from Yemen towards Israel.
