This has been one of the key messages for two decades: processed and ultra-processed foods and drinks are bad for your health, and contribute in particular to the development of cancer, in particular by promoting overweight and chronic inflammation. A new study illustrates this impact particularly well, as well as the positive impact of making changes to your daily diet.

A new prospective study, including more than 450,000 participants, tested this association. She suggests that reducing the share of this type of food by only 10% would already drive away – A little – the risks of 25 cancers different, according to data from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC).

According to the authors, it would not even be necessary to convert – even partially – to a “healthy” diet of the Mediterranean type to begin to reduce its risk: replacing 10% of the most processed foods with minimally processed foods (minimally processed food) such as Whole grainsof the dairy productsof the vegetables and coffee, would already be enough to “nibble” the first percent of the risk of cancer in general, and especially those of the esophagus, colon, liver, breast, head and neck.

This result is not surprising when one considers that ultra-processed “food” contributes 25 to 60% of daily energy intake in Western countries (32% among study participants). The authors point out that this category of foods generally presents a poor nutritional quality, at the same time as high energy content that it incorporates many food additives as well as non-food pollutants (particularly from packaging) and that it is more readily associated with alcohol consumption .
