Codes found by 9to5Mac in the first beta version of iOS 17.4 may well have revealed to us some clues about the state of development of artificial intelligence and Apple — which, as widely rumored, could very well appear with iOS 18, which should be presented at WWDC24.

According to the vehicle, the new version of the system that equips iPhones brings a new framework called “SiriSummarization” full of examples of prompts of the system. Some of the requests found in the code include phrases such as “please summarize”, “please answer this question” and “please summarize the text provided” (all in English, of course).

To be frameworkit is worth noting, is currently communicating with the famous ChatGPTyes OpenAI — although probably just for testing, since it’s much more likely that Apple will end up using its own language model in a future version of iOS than a third-party tool. Apparently, the company would be using OpenAI technology precisely to compare it to its own solution.

ChatGPT, it’s worth noting, isn’t the only third-party language model that’s mentioned in the iOS 17.3 beta code. In addition to it, references were also found to the (less known, it’s true) FLAN-T5whose details can be seen on this page.

Those prompts also reference orders placed in the form of a text message sent via iMessage or SMS 1Short message serviceor short message service.which is consistent with a rumor circulated by Bloomberg at the end of last year. So, it’s almost safe to say that the Messages app (Messages) will have some kind of integration with Apple’s language model.

SiriSummarization is apparently capable of carrying out summaries on the device itself, eliminating the need for communication with any internet service. Even so, everything indicates that Apple is working with two versions of its language model (internally known as Ajax): one that works 100% offline and another that depends on cloud processing to deliver the answers.

From the looks of it, iOS 18 has everything to be one of the most important updates for Apple in years. Anxious?
