On April 16, a book by the British-American novelist Salman Rushdie will be published in the United States, in which the latter addresses the stabbing attack he was subjected to in the year 2022.

Rushdie (76 years old) lost the sight in one eye, after being subjected to a stabbing attack carried out by a young American of Lebanese origin who rushed towards the writer while he was about to give a speech when he participated on August 12, 2022, in a conference in Chautauqua in northwestern New York State.

“So this is you”

During a program on CBS News that will be shown on Sunday, Rushdie read excerpts from his new book, entitled “Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder.”

He said: “The last thing my right eye saw was a man dressed in black who arrived quickly like a low-lying missile.” He added: “I admit that I sometimes imagined that my killer would come to a public event and rush at me in exactly this way.”

He continued, “The first thing that came to my mind when I saw this killer rushing towards me was, ‘So this is you?'”

Salman Rushdie was born in 1947 in Bombay, India, and published his first novel, “Grimmus” in 1975. Rushdie has about fifteen novels, stories for young people, short stories, and articles. He won the Booker Prize in 1981 for his novel, “Midnight’s Children.”

He spent many years in hiding after an Iranian fatwa wasted his blood in 1989 because of his book “The Satanic Verses,” which was considered offensive to Islam.

But in recent years he has lived relatively freely. He always wondered about the identity of the person who would kill him, according to what he revealed in the book.

“I was surprised”

Rushdie said on CBS News: One of the surgeons who saved his life told him, “At first I was unlucky, then I was really lucky.”

When Rushdie asked him why he said this, the surgeon replied, “The man who attacked him had no idea how to kill a man with a knife.”

Rushdie’s attacker was immediately arrested. The American police said that his name is Hadi Matar, who is 24 years old and from the city of Fairfield in the state of New Jersey. He is of Lebanese origins and his family comes from the town of Yaroun in the south.

Matar confirmed that he was “surprised” that Rushdi escaped death and was only injured during that attack, in a previous interview with him conducted by the New York Post newspaper from inside Matar Prison. The 24-year-old said at the time: “When I heard that he had escaped death, I was surprised.” .
