The National Center for Nuclear Energy, Science and Technology (CNESTEN) is organizing, from September 25 to 29, at the Maâmora Nuclear Studies Center, a regional course on blue carbon for the benefit of 36 African professionals.
A press release from CNESTEN specifies that this regional course, organized in partnership with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), is part of the regional cooperation agreement for Africa on research, development and Nuclear Science and Technology Training (AFRA), and is focused on the processes of design, sampling, sample pretreatment, and sediment dating.
This course, it is added, aims to provide training on the theme of “Blue Carbon”, with particular emphasis on the use of nuclear and isotopic techniques to assess the capacity of coastal ecosystems to act as carbon sink.
This event brings together experts from the IAEA and CNESTEN, adds the same source, also highlighting the participation of 36 professionals from 15 African countries, namely South Africa, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Djibouti, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Mauritania, Mauritius, Senegal, Seychelles, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, in addition to Morocco.
To this end, CNESTEN says it shares its experience with similar institutions in countries in the African region and provides them with infrastructure and analysis laboratories, particularly those which have accreditation according to the ISO 17025 standard.
The organization of this training confirms the important role that CNESTEN plays and its strong positioning on a regional scale in the use of nuclear and isotopic techniques in the field of environmental protection, an area for which the Center is recognized as an international collaboration center by the IAEA.
