Regional Train Derails in Northern France Leaving 44 Injured

A regional TER train operating the Rouen-Caen route derailed in France’s Seine-Maritime department on Friday, injuring 44 people, including an 18-year-old passenger evacuated in critical condition. The accident involved 186 passengers and triggered a major emergency response involving over 100 firefighters and police officers near Cléon.

The Crash and Immediate Emergency Response

The derailment unfolded around 19:45 local time as the passenger formation traveled between Tourville and Elbeuf-Saint-Aubin. The train carried 186 individuals when it left the rails in Normandy. Forty-three people sustained minor injuries, while Rouen prosecutor Sébastien Gallois confirmed that an 18-year-old woman required emergency evacuation in absolute urgency.

Local authorities deployed a substantial workforce to secure the perimeter and triage victims. Prefect Jean-Benoît Albertini arrived at the scene to coordinate rescue operations alongside state rail operator SNCF.

Transportation Minister Philippe Tabarot noted that the immediate priority remained patient care and traffic recovery. SNCF Réseau acknowledged significant delays across regional lines connecting Rouen, Caen, and Le Havre, with some services running up to two and a half hours behind schedule.

Inside the Carriage: Passenger Accounts

Louis, a 24-year-old passenger interviewed by public broadcaster Ici, described how subtle movements rapidly escalated.

“At the two or three seconds [mark] it became more and more violent,” Louis explained. He recalled that staying seated became impossible, forcing him to grip the forward seatback as windows shattered and ballast gravel sprayed through the carriage.

The Investigation and Preliminary Findings

The Rouen judicial police launched an immediate inquiry to uncover the root cause of the derailment. Investigators subjected the train driver to substance screening almost immediately. According to the public prosecutor’s office, all drug and alcohol tests returned negative results.
