Weight reduction is therefore the main objective of constructing a tourbillon. It is for this reason that the turbine was machined from a lightweight titanium alloy. Due to the complex geometry and small dimensions of the part, the milling process alone took several hours.
After machining, each of the twelve tiny blades was hand polished and finished to an incredibly high level of detail and aesthetic perfection. To prevent the turbine from weighing down the mechanism, Markus Bühler used it as the upper part of the tourbillon cage, in place of the regulator.
Thus, the element that draws attention to the dial also has a technical function: the hairspring is fixed to the underside of one of the blades and the watchmaker can adjust the zero crossing of the balance wheel by turning the turbine.
The tourbillon is made up of 56 parts and weighs only 0.663 grams. The pallet and escapement wheel have been treated with Diamond Shell technology, a special coating that reduces friction and improves the flow of energy within the movement.
The 43 mm case (water resistant to 100 meters) and the crown are in platinum; it has been hand finished with polished surfaces around the bezel and lugs. Thanks to this finish, the whitish shimmer of platinum is accentuated. Its glossy black lacquered dial is adorned with printed white numerals and applied indexes coated with Superluminova.
This watch is powered by the IWC 82905 manufacture caliber. The Pellaton winding system, reinforced with ceramic components, guarantees a power reserve of 80 hours. The plates, bridges and rotor – visible through the sapphire caseback – are blackened by PVD coating, then laser engraved; the engraved parts are then rhodium-plated.
This watch is worn on a black Cordovan strap, printed with Markus Bühler’s signature on its underside.
