RELEASE: Motorola Edge 40 | Test in heavy games

2023-05-23 23:00:00

The Motorola Edge 40 was launched in May 2023 with the MediaTek Dimensity 8020 processor, 8 GB of RAM and a 4400 mAh battery. The display consists of a P-OLED panel, 6.55″ in physical size, fullHD resolution and 144hz refresh rate.

As the Edge 40 was released just now, it is to be expected that its price is a bit high by standards. Currently it is sold by the range of R$ 3.600,00, however, it is a matter of time before that number drops considerably.

As we always do, the Edge 40’s competitor in this episode of Roda Liso is the Edge 30, its direct predecessor. With this comparison we will be able to accurately measure Motorola’s progress in improving its most entry-level flagship handset.

And of course, when it comes to expensive devices and top of the line, we will play all the games on this list in the higher graphics.

Motorola Edge 40 test in heavy games

Asphalt 9

As always, who opens our game test today is Asphalt 9. With the graphics always maximized, this game gives work for a lot of cell phones.

The Edge 40 scored an average of 60 FPS, with 100% stability in the game, marking an autonomy well of just 5:15h duration.

Edge 30 also boasted performance in Asphalt 9, scoring an average of 60 FPS, with 100% stability and a mixuruca autonomy of just 1:40h of battery life.

COD Mobile

Despite being a new device, with a little used processor, the Edge 40 managed to do well in terms of compatibility with COD Mobile. Maximum graphics were unlocked, as well as a framerate of 60 FPS.

Even the Edge 40 managed to maximize its performance and reach the 60 FPS spikes in COD. Stability wasn’t nearly perfect either: 99% only. Finally, his battery life marked a duration of 4:15h of scheduled gameplay.

The Edge 30 stayed in the same performance zone, scoring 60 FPS, with 100% stability and autonomy of 3:05 hours.

Diablo Immortal

One thing is for sure: we had a clear evolution of performance from Diablo Immortal on Edge 30 to Edge 40, just check out what happened.

Edge 40 completely mastered the game, scoring incredible 60 FPS average, with one 95% ALMOST ideal stability. Its autonomy was 3:15h of battery lifenothing much different from the result in the other games on the list.

Edge 30, on the other hand, was beaten by Diablo, scoring just 30 frames on average, with a stability of 100% and autonomy of just 2:40h duration.

eFootball

Leaving now for our Little Football, as always everything went smoothly in terms of performance.

The average frame rate on the Edge 40 was 60 FPS, with 100% stability and an impressive range of 6:25h of battery life. Unfortunately Edge 30 was not tested in this game, a pity.

Fortnite

If I were to define the Edge 40’s performance in Fortnite in one word, I would use “POTENTIAL”. This device here ran the game very well, practically without any hiccups. What happens is that the processor is not able to play frame rates higher than 30 in the game, so all that firepower is useless. What remains is to wait for some future update, both of Fortnite, as well as of the Motorola system itself, with the purpose of improving this compatibility in the games.

Anyway, your frame rate was 30, with a low of 28thus bringing exceptional stability.

Edge 30, on the other hand, established itself with an average performance of 60 FPS and a minimum of 40, making it one of the best phones to play Fortnite in the 2022 ranking.

Free Fire

Unlike the POCO and Xiaomi cell phones, the Motorola ones do not have as much compatibility with our dearest Fogo Livre.

Around here, you’ll have to settle for a “only” performance. 60 FPS average, 100% stability and 5:45h of autonomy is the battery

The Edge 30 finished with the same feedback as its successor: 60 FPS on average, with 100% stability and 3:45h of battery life.

Genshin Impact

I was impressed with the performance at Genshin because, honestly, I thought it would be much worse than it was.

The Edge 40 scored a impressive 44 FPS averageas in stability spiked at 99% and an autonomy of 3:00 hours duration. It was a little more performance and this device would manage to reach the Roda Liso Seal, a shame.

The Edge 30 fared a little worse, scoring an average 41 frames, 98% stability and a 3:40h of battery life.

Mortal Kombat

Motorola cell phones ALMOST never disappoint when the game in question is Mortal Kombat. Whenever we tested a device from the brand in this game, the performance ended up excellent, with frame rates at the limit of the screen frequency.

The Edge 40 scored an average of 120 FPS, with 98% stability and an autonomy of 3:15 hours is the battery

The Edge 30 also remained at the top, but lost just a little to the competitor. It scored an average of 118 FPS, with 99% stability and an autonomy of 1:55h of battery life.

????Competitive Wheel Seal???? for both, but Edge 40 won.

PUBG

With the help of our beloved GFX Tools, we’ve maximized both the frame rate and graphical quality of PUBG, if you look at the results. The Edge 40 was one of the few smartphones that we tested that managed to support the game’s high framerate on maximum graphics, without stuttering or glitching its performance.

He scored a 90 FPS average with 100% stability and autonomy of 3:05h of battery life.

The Edge 30 was never tested with GFX Tools turned on, so you should know that, normally, without the help of these programs, the device manages to score an average of 40 FPS, with 100% stability and autonomy of 3:10h, as he pointed out to us On test.

????Competitive Wheel Seal???? for Edge 40.

Tower of Fantasy

To end our test, we have Tower Of Fantasy, which always gives unusual results even to our most powerful smartphones.

Edge 40 had good and bad at the same time. Good thing he scored 60 FPS average, with 97% stability and 3:15h of battery life. The bad thing is that it did not allow a frame rate of 90 FPS, which is terrible, considering that there are weaker cell phones that can already handle this service.

Temperature

We played an hour of COD Mobile to find out how much battery is lost in that period, as well as the temperature of the device’s screen. After that one hour of gameplay, the POCO F5 warmed up ????12°C???? on its surface and lost ????21%???? loading.

The most worrying thing here is not the temperature, after all the device warmed up as expected for cell phones of this level. The biggest problem I see at this stage is the high amount of charge lost in an hour of gameplay. Usually the other smartphones we tested burn somewhere around 12% to 15% of battery, so a loss as high as that of the Edge 40 is certainly worrying. Unfortunately, this is the price to pay when you have a thin smartphone with a smaller amount of mAh.

Conclusion

There are no complaints beyond what is expected for the Edge 40. This cell phone is well built, light, has a good ‘grip’ when holding it to play (if you don’t use cases) and the screen is comfortable for the eyes. Its performance is no wonder, but it is acceptable once you consider the smartphone as a complete package and not just its firepower.

What really left something to be desired was compatibility in some games, more specifically in Fortnite and Tower of Fantasy, but this is not crucial at all. A second and final problem we analyzed was the Edge 40’s below average battery life. In heavier games, such as Genshin and Diablo, it provided very few hours of gameplay from 100% to 0, which is terrible if you for a gamer who spends long hours with his cell phone.

After the analysis, the Edge 40 will receive a ????Competitive Wheel Seal???? in our game test, occupying the 8th place in the ranking of top-of-the-line cell phones.
