Reliable Weather Forecasts: Short-term, Medium-term, and Long-term Outlooks

2023-10-05 16:42:00

Hello Jean-Paul, there are 3 types of forecasts. Short-term forecasts (1 to 2 days) which have the highest percentage of reliability. Those in the medium term (5 to 7 days) for which the forecaster must interpret the models to determine the most plausible scenario. And finally long-term forecasts which go beyond 7 days to several months and where we lose precision. We can of course establish trends (dry, mild, humid, etc.) but rather over large portions of territory. If we cannot give a reliable forecast, we can rely on statistics. In the plains, the probability of having a white Christmas is 5% compared to 30-35% on the Ardennes peaks and 20 to 25% for Bertrix above 400 meters of altitude.

And about the rest of the country this Friday?

In the morning, quite a few medium clouds especially north of the capital to the east. The further we go towards Hainaut, France and the south, the brighter it will be thanks to a more marked anticyclonic influence and a more southwest-oriented flow. The presence of the sun will cause temperatures to rise (16-17°C in the plains at midday).

Afternoon, quite a bit of sunshine over Hainaut, the coast, Brabants and the southern provinces while we will still observe clouds drifting from the north to the east but with increasing brightness. A pleasant late-season day during which we will reach 20 or even 21°C in low and middle Belgium and 16 to 17°C on the Ardennes peaks under a moderate southwest wind. In the evening, the sky will clear with the formation of slightly more widespread fog and low clouds.
