Thursday, Simon Distexhe, a young 21-year-old student from Hannut (in the province of Liège), lost his life following an evening which took place in Liège. The young man was part of the committee of the regional circle “La Hannutoise” of the Cité ardente. “[…] One of our committee members, Simon Distexhe, has unfortunately left us, indicates the committee on its Facebook page. Simon was loved by all and one of our dearest members. It is with a heavy heart and full of sadness that we announce this terrible news to you.”
Following this tragic death, the committee decided to suspend its activities, “in order to honor his memory and respect everyone’s mourning, we are ending our activities this year”. Other committees decided to follow suit.
On the side of AGEL (General Association of Liège Students), sadness also dominates. “The AGEL has unfortunately become aware of the death of Simon, a young student from the Regional committees, indicates the association on social networks. Our first thoughts are obviously with Simon, his family and his loved ones in these difficult times. AGEL sends them its most sincere condolences.”
“Exchange about prevention”
It offers assistance to students who wish it. “Although the AGEL, which represents the baptism committees of the Liège region, does not supervise this event or the regional ones, it is still available and is already in contact with the various regional committees to discuss prevention and measures to be put in place in order to avoid the occurrence of such incidents as much as possible.”
AGEL has already set up psychological assistance and discussion groups in collaboration with the Red Cross. Help for everyone who wants it after this tragic event.
After a private evening
The young man’s death would have occurred after a private evening, on the sidelines of officially organized activities. A group of students reportedly spent an evening with Simon and found him unconscious shortly after. Despite the prompt intervention of the emergency services, Simon died in hospital. Excessive alcohol consumption is believed to be the cause of death. The young man would have indeed choked after vomiting.

The family of the young student announced that the funeral ceremony will take place this Wednesday, October 11 at the Delarbre funeral home in Lincent, where he is buried. A ceremony during which “we ask you to wear your most beautiful colors”, as one of his sisters indicated.
