Actor Tyler Christopher, known for his performance as Nikolas Cassadine in the American series General Hospital, died this Tuesday morning at the age of 50 at his residence in San Diego, California.
According to his castmate from the same series, Maurice Benard, a heart complication took his life. The actor had battled bipolar depression and alcohol.
“It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Tyler Christopher. “Tyler passed away this morning after a cardiac event in his San Diego apartment,” Benard, who played ‘Sonny Corinthos’ on the ABC soap opera, wrote in a heartfelt Instagram post.
“Tyler was a sweet soul and a wonderful friend to everyone who knew him. “He was an advocate for better mental health and substance use treatment,” he added.
In a statement, his manager, Chi Muoi, said he was devastated and said the news “was incredibly shocking.”
“He was a very talented actor and, more importantly, an incredible friend. My heart goes out to his friends and family who loved him so much,” reads the text broadcast by CNN.

Tyler Christopher was born in Joliet, Illinois, on November 11, 1972. He was the youngest of four brothers belonging to a family with Native American ancestry. His mother, Jimi-Ann, belonged to the Choctaw tribe and his father, Jim Baker, was Seneca.
Christopher began his acting career in 1996, when he was cast as Nikolas Cassadine in the soap opera “General Hospital.” The character was a success and Christopher remained on the series for several years.
