If startups want to stand out, they will have to stop working from home. The words of Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI (ChatGPT) are raw, but take on more meaning when he explains that all great projects are built in the office.

Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg and Sam Altman don’t like working from home

The CEO of OpenAI – the artificial intelligence company behind ChatGPT and GPT-4 – Sam Altman, was the exceptional guest of a conference organized by the startup Stripe, where he shared his strong opinion on telework. As has already happened with other great CEOs, like Elon Musk with his companies or Marl Zuckerberg with the Meta empire, OpenAI’s COO was also highly critical of remote work – which has been on the rise since the Covid-19 pandemic.

When Sam Altman was invited to advising startups on whether or not to set up teleworking, the CEO suggested that the era of remote work was over. The thinking head of the company’s operations specializing in artificial intelligence said that the technology is not yet ready for people to work entirely remotely. The leader suggested that office work is a better model to create new innovative and high-performance products for the future.

OpenAI’s CEO hasn’t always had the same opinion on telecommuting

The CEO of OpenAI therefore seems to have become more conservative over time. On his Twitter account in 2014, he spoke openly about how he thought remote work was great “in many cases”. Yet in January of this year he said on the bluebird that it is possible to do something remotely, but especially since it is better to work in person. “In my opinion, most tech companies that have rushed to permanent remote work have made a big mistake, and the cracks are starting to show”, recognizing all the same that it could work in some cases.

Despite these statements, in January, rumors indicated that the firm was beginning to hire new developers who were doing their work remotely and from regions like Latin America and Eastern Europe (Traffic lights). This would mean that OpenAI engages in telecommuting and saves on salaries (the average salary in these regions is much lower than in the United States). In 2022, Sam Altman also said that “working in person is much better than working remotely for really complex conversations” and thathe was delighted to be back in the office.

However, the CEO also highlighted the fact that some of his best people are in remote places and that they continued to support them. Before adding that if you hated San Francisco, it shouldn’t stop you from “apply to OpenAI”recognizing, at the same time, that working in person can lead to the loss of certain talents.
