Rennes Christmas Shopping: Traders’ Challenges and Tips for Navigating the City

This is one of the most important times of the year for traders. With Christmas just a few days away, gift shopping is in full swing. But shopping in the city center of Rennes (Ille-et-Vilaine) is obviously not for everyone: metro line B is still down, a bus drivers’ strike is impacting certain lines of the Star network and parking with the Christmas market and the funfair is a headache. For downtown merchants, this isn’t exactly good timing.

The traders themselves are impacted. Fabian is the manager of “Terre de jeux” and for his colleagues, it’s a bit of a hassle: “My employees and colleagues have difficulty arriving at work on time despite the precautions they take. I have a colleague who comes from Beauregard, north of Rennes. Now, it is problematic because the shuttle is not in place is quite random.” For customers too, it’s not easy, explains the manager: “We had some comments from customers, notably yesterday with a specific case. We had someone who parked in a double line saying that “it’s an emergency” to come to our store. Yes, that worked. an impact very clearly.”

So when possible, the car is preferred to public transport. Léo, manager of the Ariane bookstore, observed this: “There is a lot more traffic. As a result, parking is more difficult, especially since parking spaces tend to be limited in the city center of Rennes. But hey, you have to do with.” Dealing with it, there is also a bit of fatalism among Solveig, co-manager of the bookstore la nuit des temps: “We have warned our customers to possibly be able to anticipate their trips. I think there are always alternatives. Line A of the metro is working, let’s not be too defeatist either. We are perhaps more impacted by the lack of school holidays before Christmas than due to the transport problem.”
