Renovate Switzerland Activists Clash with Police in Unauthorized Protest March: Violation of Freedom of Expression and Assembly

2023-07-16 07:19:49

Around 20 activists from Renovate Switzerland met on Saturday morning in the Parc de Planta in Sion to prepare a Slow March. However, this did not happen: before the group could start marching, nine police officers arrived, who, on the instructions of the mayor, checked the demonstrators and confiscated their material. The city administration had not approved the protest march in advance, according to the Valais canton police.

Renovate Switzerland is disappointed with the intervention of the police. The group wrote in a press release that the right to freedom of expression and freedom of assembly had been violated. Making a demonstration dependent on a permit is not a lawful restriction and violates international law.

About a month ago, an action by Renovate Switzerland in Sion was nipped in the bud: at that time, two climate activists wanted to block the Rohne Bridge. However, the sit-in didn’t last long: the police were there quickly and took the three people away – before they even had the opportunity to tape their hands to the street.
